How to Convert PDF Without Installing Software

Make, edit and extract text from PDFs in your browser, on locked-down work PCs and Chromebooks, without installing a desktop program.

Why you may not need a desktop PDF program

Desktop PDF suites need installation, sometimes administrator rights, and often a subscription. On a school laptop, a work PC with install restrictions, or a Chromebook, that may not be an option. Modern browsers can parse and write PDF files themselves, so many everyday PDF jobs can run in a web page instead.

How in-browser PDF tools work

Nexvert loads its PDF code into your browser tab. PDF editing uses pdf-lib, page rendering uses PDF.js, and text recognition uses Tesseract compiled to WebAssembly. Your PDF is processed in the tab’s memory and the result downloads straight to your device. The file is not uploaded.

What you can do with PDFs in Nexvert

Each of these runs in the browser with no install:

  • •Create PDFs: Word (DOCX) to PDF, JPG and other images to PDF, and Markdown or plain text to PDF.
  • •Combine and split: merge several PDFs into one, or split a PDF into single pages or page ranges.
  • •Rearrange pages: reorder, rotate, crop, remove or extract pages.
  • •Edit and finish: fill form fields, flatten forms, add a watermark, edit metadata, or resize pages to A4 or Letter.
  • •Get the text out: PDF OCR reads the text from scanned PDFs page by page and saves it as a TXT file.

What it does not do (yet)

Nexvert does not currently convert PDFs into Word, JPG, PNG or EPUB. Turning a PDF back into an editable Word document is one of the hardest conversions there is, and server-side engines still do it better than browser code. If you need that and the file is not sensitive, a dedicated online service or a desktop suite is the better tool. To get the text out of a PDF, use PDF OCR.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit PDFs on school or work computers that block software installs?

Yes. Nexvert runs entirely in the web browser, so it works on locked-down office PCs and Chromebooks as long as the site itself is not blocked.

Can Nexvert convert a PDF to Word or JPG?

Not at the moment. Nexvert can create PDFs from Word files and images, edit and reorganise PDFs, and extract text from PDFs with OCR, but it does not convert PDFs into Word, JPG or PNG.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is read and processed inside your browser tab and the result downloads directly to your device.
